Applications for research grants (research projects and research scholarships) and for funding within the Foundation’s may be submitted to the Gerda Henkel Foundation’s head office at any time. The Foundation committees meet twice a year to consider the applications and decide on funding grants.

Applications for PhD scholarships are considered throughout the year. The review and approval process is generally completed within six months. Recipients of PhD scholarships will be selected four times a year. Applications take a maximum of six months to process. We will acknowledge receipt of your application and we would ask you not to contact us by phone on this matter.

Smaller funding amounts (max. €15,000) are granted by the Foundation through a simplified procedure with a deliberation time of approximately three to four months. PhD scholarships and all applications within the Special Programme Central Asia are not considered for this procedure.



The application deadline for the Foundation committees autumn meeting in 2011 is 10 December, 2010. Applications have to be in the Foundation's office by this day. The date of the postmark is not valid. The deadline is not valid for applications for PhD scholarships and for smaller funding amounts (max. €15,000).

The Foundation’s committee is holding its meeting in April 2011. If your application is successful, funding can start at the beginning of May 2011 at the very earliest.


Applications for the Special Programme Islam, the modern nation state and transnational movements are considered within a special selection procedure.

The application deadline is 10 December, 2010.

In 2010, the Special Programme to support the next generation of historians in Russia, the Ukraine, Moldova and Belarussia has been integrated in the Foundation's Basic Programme. The last application deadline for the Special Programme "Eastern Europe" was 01 April, 2010. Since this last call for papers, applications from Russia, the Ukraine, Moldova and Belarussia are considered within the Foundation's Basic Programme.
