Scholarship Programme for Researchers in the field of Classics

Founded in 1764, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, was the third college in New England and the seventh in the United States of America. As one of the leading "Ivy League" universities, Brown has an outstanding academic programme, with a long tradition of academic excellence. Furthermore the Department of Classics has a renowned international reputation in the field of historical humanities.

Call for Proposals
In close cooperation with the Department of Classics at Brown University, the Gerda Henkel Foundation offers outstanding scholars in Classics an opportunity for academic research in the USA. The goal of this scholarship is to strengthen the academic exchange between established scholars from the USA and German-speaking countries.
The Gerda Henkel Scholarship is awarded every two years. It covers the costs for one academic year (i.e. September to May) at Brown University, the costs of a substitute for a period of nine months at the scholar’s home university as well as support for travel and other research-related expenses. The Gerda Henkel Foundation will also cover 50 percent of the housing costs. The other half will be covered by Brown University. During the period of funding, the grant holders have no teaching obligations. The scholarship is awarded bi-annually.

Eligibility
Eligible candidates must:

  • currently be employed by a German-speaking university or comparable academic research institution

  • hold at least a PhD degree and demonstrate superior academic achievements

  • give at least one lecture on their research interests during their stay at Brown, be available for occasional discussions with interested graduate students, and generally take part in the intellectual and social life of the Department of Classics

  • present the results of their research at Brown to the Gerda Henkel Foundation, in a report and/or academic publication

Application
All applications must be submitted in English language to the Foundation’s headquarters and will be reviewed by a scientific advisory committee. Members of the selection committee and Foundation staff are not eligible for the Gerda Henkel Scholarship.

  • curriculum vitae

  • list of major publications

  • detailed description of the research proposal and expected outcome (max. four pages)

  • two referees

Gerda Henkel Fellowship
The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey (USA), was founded by Louis Bamberger and his sister Caroline Bamberger Fuld in 1930 and is one of the world's leading research establishments. Each year, about 190 international accredited researchers are invited to the renowned private institute, where they are given the opportunity to pursue their studies in one of the four schools (Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences) without other commitments.

Call for Proposals
Since 1993, the Foundation has maintained a scholarship programme, awarding grants for research at the School of Historical Studies. The Gerda Henkel Fellowship is made available for a period of one academic year. The permanent members of the School of Historical Studies select the candidates in consultation with the Foundation. In 2008, the trustees voted to extend the programme for another five years.

Green Templeton College, Oxford University

Fellowship for Journalists in the field of Humanities

In cooperation with Oxford University (Green Templeton College) and the Reuters Foundation, the Gerda Henkel Foundation awards a journalism fellowship within the renowned Reuters Foundation Programme to journalists who work in the field of humanities. This programme at Oxford University enables established journalists to pursue their specialised interests with greater intensity and ease than is otherwise possible under the pressure of media deadlines.

Call for Proposals
The fellowship offers a six-month study opportunity at Oxford University and covers the costs for travel, accommodation and tuition fees. During this period, the participants of the programme are expected to produce a substantial piece of writing in keeping with academic standards. Each fellow will have to present a lecture on his/her research topic and will be assigned to an academic advisor who will support the fellow’s research work. The research programme at Oxford can be used to establish a broad range of contacts with journalists from the British media as well as researchers and colleagues from international media organisations. The programme is complemented by seminars, lectures and study trips, and special events give the programme participants the possibility to meet well-known journalists and experts.

Eligibility
The programme is open to print and broadcast journalists from any country in the world who carry out research in the field of Historical Humanities, particularly in Art History, Modern and Ancient History, Legal History or Islamic History. Within these areas, the participants can freely choose their research topic, although it should ideally be connected with their professional activity. The usual age brackets at Oxford are 28 to 45, with a minimum requirement of 5 years’ experience of professional journalism.

Application
After shortlisting by the Reuters Institute in consultation with the Reuters Foundation and the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the final selection of the winning journalist will be made by a selection committee of Oxford University. For full details please consult the Reuters Institute's website.
