PhD Scholarships

Applications are considered throughout the year. The review and approval process is generally completed within six months. Recipients of PhD scholarships will be selected four times a year.

The aim of the scholarship programme is to promote highly qualified young scholars. We will only applicants who have proven their exceptional talents by means of their achievements in their studies and the results of their examinations and whose dissertations are expected to be wellabove the average. The duration and course of the studies, final grade, age and any special qualifications will play a significant role in the selection process.

Duration
The duration of the grant will be for two years.

Type and scope to the scholarship, payment:

  • basic scholarship sum, if appropriate

    • supplement for travel abroad

    • childcare allowance

And if required
  • travel expenses

  • material expenses

Prerequisites for applying
  • Please complete the electronic application form and send this form - also as a printout - along with the other documents by mail.

  • Applications which are incomplete or too voluminous will not be given consideration. The same holds true for applications for which no expert opinion has been submitted.

  • Only applicants who are not older than 28 years at the time of concluding their studies may be included in the selection process. (This age limit shall be extended to take the following situations into account: night school, bringing up children, military service, work experience and other exceptional circumstances.)

  • The overall grade of the undergraduate degree has to be excellent. For candidates with a foreign degree, a special examination for inclusion in the selection process will be performed in the branch office.

  • Applications and expert opinions may be submitted in either German or English.

Application documents
Important information for applicants: When applying for financial support for PhD scholarships, please use an electronic application form. This also applies to smaller funding amounts (max. € 15,000).

The following documents must be included in an application for a doctoral scholarship (please submit your documents loose in a simple folder or wallet - do not staple them together):
  • application overview (Form for PhD scholarship application)

  • exposé (max. 8 pages incl. - if needed - a bibliography; please do not submit more pages)

  • schedule and working plan with information about the necessary travel to archives, libraries and museums or other destinations required for the completion of the dissertation (max. 2 pages)

  • detailed cost calculation (estimates if need be) of the probable travel and material costs

  • curriculum vitae in tabular form

  • certificate(s) of university degree (or seminar attendance certificates for direct doctorades); references do not have to be attested

  • two expert opinions which provide information on the applicant's qualifications and about the quality of the doctoral project. These are to be sent directly to the Foundation by the author (signed by the author - an unsigned preliminary version via email or fax is accepted).

Please do not send the following information:
  • High School Leaving certificates

  • internship certificates

  • seminar grades (only required for direct PhDs)

  • employment references

After having sent the electronic application form, we kindly ask you to send us a printout of the completed application form along with the other documents by mail.

 We will acknowledge receipt of your application and we would ask you not to contact us by phone on this matter.



We kindly ask you to understand, that incomplete applications will not be considered any more after the expiration of one year.
