Special Programme Islam, the modern nation state and transnational movements

Grants
Proposals are invited for the following initiatives:

  • specific short-term research projects

  • Research scholarships in the researcher's home country and abroad (max. 24 months)

  • Conferences

  • Publishing Aid (only awarded for projects already being supported by the Foundation)

Application deadline
The next application deadline is 10 December, 2010.

Application documents can be written either in German or in English.


Proposals
Proposals should include:

Research projects and research scholarships

  • application overview (Form for research project application;
    Form for scholarship application)

  • description of the research proposal (max. 8 pages)

  • work plan and time schedule, travel itinerary (if needed)

  • detailed cost calculation (the specific funds being applied for must be precisely defined)

  • curriculum vitae and publications of the applicant(s)

  • if appropriate, curriculum vitae and publications of the proposed project coordinator and/or participant

After having sent the electronic application form, we kindly ask you to send us a printout of the completed application form along with the other documents by mail.

Additionally for scholarship applications:

  • certificate(s) of university degree (or seminar attendance certificates for direct doctorades); references do not have to be attested

  • at least one letter of recommendation by a university lecturer, to be sent by the author directly to the Gerda Henkel Foundation (signed by the author - an unsigned preliminary version via email or fax is accepted)

After having sent the electronic application form, we kindly ask you to send us a printout of the completed application form along with the other documents by mail.

Conferences
Applications for funding of a conference should contain the following documents:

  • application overview (= Form for research project application)

  • conference concept

  • list of speakers and subjects

  • cost plan which provides information about the volume of funding the applicants can provide themselves and grants that have been promised by other supporting institutions (normally travel expenses and hotel expenses - no flat-rate daily allowance shall be paid)

  • statement as to whether an identical or a comparable application has been submitted to any other funding body recently or at any time in the past.

After having sent the electronic application form, we kindly ask you to send us a printout of the completed application form along with the other documents by mail.

Publishing Aid
Publishing aid is currently only awarded for projects already being supported by the Foundation.

Applications for printing aid are to include a two-page summary of the academic merit and innovativeness of the monograph/collection, at least two cost calculations from independent publishing houses and the manuscript on which the calculations have been made (this can also be provided on CD-ROM).



Special Programme Central Asia

Grants
Proposals are invited for the following initiatives:

  • specific short-term research projects

  • PhD and research scholarships in the researcher's home country and abroad (max. 24 months)

  • limited travel grants for researchers from Central Asia to hold lectures and to attend academic conferences

  • measures to conserve and restore material held in libraries and archives and to support rescue excavations

Application 
Throughout the year, grant seekers can direct proposals to the Foundation or be nominated by university professors.
Proposals should include:

  • application overview (Form for scholarship application; Form for research project application)

  • description of the research proposal (max. 8 pages)

  • work plan and time schedule

  • overview of necessary trips to archives, libraries, museums, etc., including a list of the costs involved (travel costs and lodging - no flat-rate daily allowance or hotel expenses, material costs e.g. for photocopies or film versions of archive material, photographs, etc., not a lump sum for books)

  • curriculum vitae

  • statement as to whether the project has already been sponsored or will be sponsored by another institution or whether an application for funding has been submitted somewhere else


Additionally for scholarship applications:
  • copies of university certificates (translated and legally attested)

  • two references from university lecturers , preferably with one of them from outside of the applicant's home country (signed and stamped)

  • reference from a German mentor, with his/her agreement to provide academic counselling to the scholarship holder and to invite the applicant as a guest to his/her research institute (for stays in Germany)

  • certificate of language proficiency (German or English)


Application deadline
Applications may be submitted to the Gerda Henkel Foundation’s head office at any time.
The Foundation committees meet twice a year to consider the applications and decide on funding grants.
The application deadline for the Foundation's committees spring meeting in 2011 is 10 December, 2010.

Special Programme to support the next generation of historians in Russia, the Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus

For your attention:
In 2010, the Special Programme Eastern Europe after ten years has been integrated in the Foundation's Basic Programme. The last call for applications was April 1, 2010. Since this last call for papers, applications from Russia, the Ukraine, Moldova and Belarussia are considered within the Foundation's Basic Programme.
