Das französisch-deutsche Forschungsprojekt beschäftigt sich mit den unter Ludwig XIV. initiierten Conférences, kunsttheoretischen Vorträgen und Diskussionen an der Pariser Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Diese zum weitaus größten Teil unbekannten und unveröffentlichten Schlüsseldokumente der französischen und europäischen Kunsttheorie werden in einer kritischen und im Ansatz historischen Ausgabe ediert und kommentiert.

Die Ausgabe lenkt den Blick auf Meisterwerke der königlichen Sammlungen und macht ebenso nachvollziehbar, welche Gemälde und Skulpturen im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert im Mittelpunkt der kunsthistorischen Debatte stehen, heute jedoch vergessen sind. Die editorische Arbeit führte zudem zu der aufregenden Erkenntnis, dass das Urteil über die französische Kunsttheorie einer Korrektur bedarf.
