New Funding Programme for Researchers in `Forced Migration´

Call for internationally oriented projects

Forced migration and the treatment of refugees and other displaced people have in recent years attracted great public attention. Likewise, research on the complex of issues has grown considerably the world over. Scholars have, however, noted that approaches to research into forced migration has in many cases been limited to specific regions and certain content has hardly been studied. With its new “Forced Migration” funding programme, the Gerda Henkel Foundation therefore seeks to support projects with an international focus that are addressing issues which have to date tended to be neglected. The projects should combine core theoretical research with concepts vital to social, humanitarian, and political practice. The funding programme is aimed at researchers all over the world. Deadline for receipt of applications is 15 June 2022.

Forced migration is limited neither to certain regions nor to current developments. Rather, it is a global phenomenon that has shaped humankind since time immemorial. An array of risks, such as violent conflict and war, persecution, discrimination, poverty, or changes to the climate and the environment can all prompt people to leave their places of origin. This is the starting point for the “Forced Migration” funding programme: This call is specifically for multidimensional research projects, whereby those that engage in comparisons across regions or time periods will also be considered. The funding programme is aimed at researchers across a range of different disciplines in the Humanities, the Social Sciences, Cultural Studies, Law and Economics.

The Gerda Henkel Foundation was established in June 1976 by Lisa Maskell in memory of her mother Gerda Henkel as an incorporated foundation under civil law, headquartered in Düsseldorf. The Gerda Henkel Foundation provides financial support for the historical humanities. Research projects that explore current issues in a larger historical context or consciously focus on topics of relevance to the present or the future receive support from programmes of a limited duration such as, for example, the “Democracy”, “Forced Migration” and “Lost Cities” funding programmes. As part of the Lisa Maskell Fellowship programme, the Foundation supports young scholars in the humanities in both Africa and Southeast Asia. With its “Patrimonies” funding initiative, it promotes the preservation of the cultural heritage, specifically in regions experiencing crisis. In connection with funded projects, the Foundation also provides assistance for social support measures as part of complementary projects. The Gerda Henkel Foundation can by virtue of its statutes pursue its objectives both inside and outside Germany.
